电大英语为你打开便捷之门

    我是一个年逾七旬，又身患重病（高血压病第三期极度危险组、冠心病等）的退休老人。年轻时在大学学过一点俄语，由于时局变化，很快就荒废了。在职期间本想学点英语，无奈工作繁忙（时任广西疾病控制中心主任医师、办公室主任兼细菌科主任，中央卫生部传染病专家咨询委员会委员，卫生部攻关科研课题十三省协作组负责人，广西流行病学会主任委员等职），未能如愿。退休后赋闲在家，一日听到中央电视台的一则评论称，不会英语和电脑者为“现代文盲”，对我触动很大，遂下决心学好英语，为国为民奉献余热。

    为了掌握英语，我曾学过“疯狂英语”“海伦英语”“新概念英语”“走遍美国”…等。但均未能坚持下去。三年前我在中央电大任教的女儿寄来由中央电大和英国开放大学合编的“开放英语”（英文名This is English）教材和崔松老师主讲的影碟，我很快就被它的魅力所吸引。此教材的特点是实用有趣，深入浅出；基本语法寓于会话之中，使学者能举一反三，随境而变；边学边练，循环记忆，便于巩固学习成果和实际应用等。通过学习电大英语．我己能书写英文信函与国外亲友交流，并帮助一些涉外婚姻的朋友掌握初级英语，有的到国外后迅速找到工作且报酬不菲，对我这个边学边教的“老师”深表感激，表示要寄机票邀请我到美国一游。这使我这个垂暮之人感到慰藉。

    诚然，电大英语与一般商业性英语教材相比有许多优点，但尚有不尽人意之处：1、影碟(VCD)内容与书面教材不完全吻合；2.英语情景会话缺乏文本参考。前者可能是教材和影碟由不同编者在不同时期制作；后者可能因为教学大纲免去听力测验所致。众所周知，学习一种语言，听力是基础，如果听不懂，又怎能说呢？现在有些电大学员对学到多少并不在意，所求仅是一个文凭或学历而已。此种不正之风，应从制度上予纠正。为了充分发挥此教材的作用，我尽个人所能，将电大影碟中英语对话记录成相应文本，并请广西电大外语教研室主任王英老师予以审校。此文本(初稿)在中央电大网站上发表后，二个月内竟有6千多人次之点击，可见想看到英语对话文本之学习者决非少数。

学习英语是一件十分困难的事情，尤其是对中、老年人而言，是需要很大的决心和耐力的。而决心源于对学英语重要性的认识，特别是要走出的那些普遍存在又十分顽固误区：

一.要认识到不学英语即为现代文盲，既误国，又害已。

科学技术为第一主产力，现代科学技术是以英语为主要语言载体的，学习现有的先进科技为我所用，无疑是多快好省的捷径，尤其是西方现代企业和社会管理的先进经验，历经二百多年的实践证明，的确是强国富民，实现社会公平的宝贵财富。二战后日本、韩国、新加坡等国的快速崛起，与普及英语，学习西方先进科技和经验是密不可分的。正如站在巨人肩上去摘知识之桃，比等待自身长高去摘要快的多。英语就是帮你爬上巨人肩膀的云梯，为何弃之不用呢？

    二.必需扬弃狭隘民族主义，地方主义的语言观。

    语言是人类进行交流(包括横向和纵向)的基本工具，但语言的种类繁多，据统计全球已有5651种。在中国初步统计约80多种，其中汉语使用人数最多。但就汉语这一语族而言，就有大量分支存在，并且相互之间难以通用。在广西南宁这个小城市，现有语种就有白话、壮话、客家话、潮州话、桂柳话和南宁本土地方语：平话等。如果不是普及普通话，人际交流就会成为大问题。有人说，讲英语是“假洋鬼子”，是不爱国的表现。难道广西人讲普通话，也是不爱广西，不爱南宁的假“捞松”（建国初期两广人对北方人的称呼，即‘老兄’之谐音）吗？邓小平说得好，“不管白猫黑猫，能抓老鼠就是好猫”。在语言观上，我们是否也可以这样认为，不管英语、地方语，能最大限度满足人们省际、国际交流的语言就是应该普及的好语言呢？

    有朋友问我；“方老，您己是行将入木之人，为何要从病床上撑起来背英语单词呢？答：“只不过想为年轻人铺路耳。”何况求知欲本身是人类三大本能（食欲、性欲、求知欲）之一。欲望的满足就是一种乐趣，何必每每深究其目的呢？顺便提一下，除了英语学习外我还通过电脑学习现代天文学、世界和中国历史、政治经济学、生物学和医学最新进展以及了解国内外重大事件的真实情况，感到极大乐趣和充实感。现在可以自豪地说我己进入最新知识领域的大门，无愧于领取幼稚园学前班的毕业证。

    承蒙中央电大老师的关爱，让我写一点学习的心得，以上见解可能是粗浅的，但却是切肤的。望阅后批评指正。

The history of April Fool's Day or All Fool's Day is uncertain, but the current thinking is that it began around 1582 in France with the reform of the calendar under Charles IX. The Gregorian Calendar was introduced, and New Year's Day was moved from March 25 - April 1 (new year's week) to January 1.

Communication traveled slowly in those days and some people were only informed of the change several years later. Still others, who were more rebellious refused to acknowledge the change and continued to celebrate on the last day of the former celebration, April 1. These people were labeled "fools" by the general populace, were subject to ridicule and sent on "fool errands," sent invitations to nonexistent parties and had other practical jokes played upon them. The butts of these pranks became known as a "poisson d'avril" or "April fish" because a young naive fish is easily caught. In addition, one common practice was to hook a paper fish on the back of someone as a joke.

This harassment evolved over time and a custom of prank-playing continue on the first day of April. This tradition eventually spread elsewhere like to Britain and Scotland in the 18th century and was introduced to the American colonies by the English and the French. Because of this spread to other countries, April Fool's Day has taken on an international flavor with each country celebrating the holiday in its own way.

In Scotland, for instance, April Fool's Day is devoted to spoofs involving the buttocks and as such is called Taily Day. The butts of these jokes are known as April 'Gowk', another name for cuckoo bird. The origins of the "Kick Me" sign can be traced back to the Scottish observance.

In England, jokes are played only in the morning. Fools are called 'gobs' or 'gobby' and the victim of a joke is called a 'noodle.' It was considered back luck to play a practical joke on someone after noon.

In Rome, the holiday is known as Festival of Hilaria, celebrating the resurrection of the god Attis, is on March 25 and is also referred to as "Roman Laughing Day."

In Portugal, April Fool's Day falls on the Sunday and Monday before lent. In this celebration, many people throw flour at their friends.

The Huli Festival is celebrated on March 31 in India. People play jokes on one another and smear colors on one another celebrating the arrival of Spring.

So, no matter where you happen to be in the world on April 1, don't be surprised if April fools fall playfully upon you.
